Gypsophila repens 'Rosea' Seeds

While the tall white Gypsophila is famous for bouquets, this charming creeping cousin is the hero of the rockery. Gypsophila repens 'Rosea' forms a low, dense mat of grey-green foliage that becomes smothered in clouds of tiny, star-shaped, pale pink flowers throughout the summer.

It is the ultimate "softener." Plant it at the edge of a raised bed, in a dry stone wall, or along a gravel path, and watch it tumble over the hard edges like a pink waterfall. It thrives in sun and poor soil, making it one of the most reliable and romantic ground cover plants you can grow.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Gypsophila repens, known as Creeping Baby's Breath, is a robust Hardy Perennial (H4). Unlike the annual florist variety, this alpine specialist returns year after year. In milder UK winters it remains semi-evergreen, retaining its delicate grey-green foliage even through the frost.

The Lime Lover: Naturally occurring on alpine limestone slopes, this plant is a master of alkaline conditions. It is the perfect problem-solver for gardeners with chalky or "thin" stony soils where more pampered perennials might struggle to find nutrients.

AGM Winner: This variety holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. This accolade confirms its outstanding performance, health, and reliability in British gardens, specifically for its ability to create a consistent, weed-suppressing floral mat.

🌱 Growing Guide

Gypsophila repens is an easy-to-grow alpine that requires very little maintenance once its need for drainage is met.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from February to June. Surface sow the seeds onto moist, gritty seed compost. Do not cover the seeds with soil as they require light to trigger germination. Keep at a steady 20°C; seedlings typically appear within 10-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and exceptionally sharp drainage. They are the ideal choice for rockeries, crevices in dry stone walls, or the edges of south-facing raised beds. If your soil is heavy clay, we strongly recommend growing them in pots or amending the planting hole with a high volume of horticultural grit.

Ongoing Care:
Once established, Creeping Baby's Breath is incredibly drought-tolerant and requires almost no watering. After the main summer flush of pink stars begins to fade, trim the entire mat back with shears. This keeps the foliage tight and neat and often encourages a second, smaller burst of blooms in early autumn.

🤝 Beautiful Garden Combinations

Creeping Gypsophila looks stunning when allowed to mingle with other sun-loving specialists from our collection:

  • 🌼 Erigeron 'Profusion': The Wall Duo. Mexican Fleabane and Creeping Gypsophila are the ultimate partners for vertical planting. The daisy-like Erigeron and starry Gypsophila weave together to create a romantic, pink-and-white frothy cascade that lasts all summer.
  • 🌿 Common Thyme: The Scented Carpet. Thyme provides a darker, evergreen leaf contrast to the silvery-grey of the Gypsophila. Both thrive in hot, dry gravel gardens and together create a textured, aromatic ground cover.

✨ Cascading Tip
For the most dramatic effect, plant Creeping Gypsophila at the very edge of a retaining wall or large pot. Its natural prostrate habit will encourage it to "spill" over the edge, creating a stunning pink floral waterfall.

🏆 Robust Rockery Perennial

Known for its stamina and ability to thrive in lean, dry conditions, Gypsophila repens is an essential choice for those wanting to add romantic, weed-suppressing ground cover that supports local solitary bees.
