Wild Chicory Seeds

Shocking azure-blue flowers on tall, wiry stems. A rugged, drought-defying native perennial that brings an airy, see-through effect and vital nectar to summer gardens.

If you have ever driven past a roadside verge in July and spotted tall, wiry stems topped with star-like flowers in a shocking shade of azure blue, you have met Wild Chicory. It is a stunning native perennial that thrives where other plants fail.

This is a plant of character. Its tough, zigzagging stems can reach over a metre high, creating an airy, see-through effect in a border or meadow. It is incredibly drought-tolerant thanks to a deep taproot, making it the perfect choice for dry gardens, gravel patches, or "rewilding" projects that need a splash of vivid colour.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Cichorium intybus is a robust Hardy Herbaceous Perennial (H7). As a native British species, it is biologically engineered to survive temperatures as low as -20°C. In its first year, it develops a low-growing rosette of dandelion-like foliage before sending up its characteristic tall, structural flowering spikes in subsequent seasons.

The "Watcher of the Road": Chicory flowers possess a distinct circadian rhythm. They open wide in the morning to capture the maximum solar energy but typically close by early afternoon or during dull, overcast weather. This "floral clock" is a fascinating biological adaptation that preserves nectar and protects the flower's reproductive organs.

Biodiversity Powerhouse: As an RHS Plant for Pollinators, Wild Chicory is an essential nectar source. Its flat, star-shaped blooms provide an easy-access landing platform for a vast array of British bees and hoverflies, making it a cornerstone species for any native wildlife meadow.

🌱 Growing Guide

Wild Chicory develops a significant taproot (similar to a parsnip) and highly resents being moved; for this reason, direct sowing is the most reliable method.

How to Sow:
Direct sow outdoors from March to May, or in September for early summer blooms the following year. Scatter seeds onto finely raked soil and cover lightly (approx. 5mm deep). Germination is typically rapid, occurring within 14-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and thrive in poor, well-drained soil. Chicory is a specialist of alkaline and chalky conditions but will tolerate almost any ground except waterlogged bog. Once established, its deep taproot makes it one of the most drought-tolerant perennials available for gravel gardens or dry borders.

Ongoing Care:
Chicory is virtually maintenance-free once established. It requires no additional watering even in peak summer heat. Stems can be cut back to the ground in late autumn to tidy the rosette for winter. If you wish to prevent self-seeding, remove the flower spikes before they turn to seed, though many gardeners leave them to naturalise.

🤝 Beautiful Native Combinations

The shocking electric blue of Chicory works spectacularly in naturalistic schemes with these available partners from our range:

  • 🥕 Wild Carrot (Daucus carota): The Roadside Duo. You frequently see these two growing together in the wild verges of Britain. The flat, lacy white umbels of the Wild Carrot provide a stunning horizontal contrast to the tall, vertical blue spikes of the Chicory. Both are indestructible and thrive in dry, poor soil.
  • 🌼 Oxeye Daisy: The Meadow Mix. The simple, cheerful combination of white petals and yellow centres makes the azure blue of the Chicory truly pop. This is a classic "High-Summer Meadow" colour scheme that mirrors the traditional British landscape while providing a 24-hour buffet for pollinators.

✨ Native Foraging Tip
The young leaves of Wild Chicory can be eaten raw in salads for a bitter, Radicchio-like kick. Historically, the deep taproots were roasted and ground to create a caffeine-free coffee substitute, celebrated for its rich, earthy flavour.

🏆 Robust Native Stamina

Known for its stamina and ability to thrive in poor, chalky soils, Cichorium intybus is an essential choice for those wanting to create a romantic, low-maintenance meadow that provides intense azure pigment for both the garden and local wildlife.
